Retrofit hackathon

Come together to create innovative solutions to one of the sector’s biggest challenges in this retrofit hackathon!

Retrofit challenge hackathon at HOMES UK

24 November

The Collab Space

10:00-12:00

The UK has the oldest housing stock in Europe and 5 million of these are social and affordable homes.

The sheer scale of the retrofitting task is huge and 2 homes per minute need to be retrofitted to meet the 2050 net zero target.

To do this we need hundreds of thousands of new retrofitters, delivering home decarbonisation at a scale never seen before.

Social landlords and local authorities have a major role to play in building the future workforce needed to deliver warm, comfortable and efficient homes for tenants.

We cannot afford to wait any longer.

Let’s work together to build practical solutions to this urgent challenge.

What is a hackathon?

This hackathon is all about bringing people together in a collaborative environment to help solve the retrofit challenge.

Working in a team, you will rapidly build innovative and practical ideas with the potential to be implemented at scale!

What is the challenge?

The central theme you will be tackling is:

“How do we attract and retain a skilled workforce that has capacity to deliver retrofit at scale?”

Here are some things that you will be thinking about:

  • How can we create confidence in the sector that will attract a skilled workforce?
  • How do we build the trust in technology for residents?
  • How do we make retrofit a conversation that people have in the pub?

The session will kick off with inspirational “lightning talks” to start the creative thinking process. Your team will also have access to retrofit experts on the day to help guide your ideas and maximise their impact.

Why should you join?

  • Learn new skills to innovate and create change
  • An opportunity to think differently and unlock new solutions to an urgent sector challenge
  • Make new contacts in a collaborative environment and benefit from expert guidance
  • Feel like you are on a journey to make a positive difference!

Teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of experts who will choose the solution that they believe will have the biggest impact on the retrofit challenge.

The winning idea will be promoted through Inside Housing and Unlock Net Zero and will also be pitched to BEIS and The Retrofit Academy’s client and employer groups with the potential to be implemented as a live solution!

Who can attend?

The hackathon is open to everyone – no expertise is needed just the passion to make a difference!
